Scope Note:

Predominantly theatrical fiction work whose plot is structured around segments featuring combinations of music, song, and dance, including such various types as backstage, comedy, rock, and musical biographies. In the Hollywood context, musicals emerged with the coming of sound motion pictures, from roots in stage musicals and operettas, revues, and vaudeville. Use Musical with Variety for musical revues. For filmed or televised productions of stage musicals, not adaptations, use the form Performance in conjunction with Musical; otherwise, use Music and the form Performance for recorded musical performances.
