There are two libraries in town and
each library indexes the holdings for both. A valid library card can be used at either
library, in fact it can be used in any public library in the state because of our
membership in the CONNECTICARD (reciprocal loan) system.
The libraries also belong to Libraries Online (LION), a consortium of 25+ public,
school and academic libraries linked to a central database with a computer terminal. This
link allows us to know in seconds which library in the consortium owns a particular title
and if it is available to loan.
We want to serve you well. If you need
assistance or have questions, please email us at: bill-lib@ledyard.lioninc.org.

The Janice W.
Bell Historical Research Room at Bill Library
Janice W. Bell a resident of Gales Ferry Village was recently honored at
Bill Library for her dedication to preserving the History of the Town.
The local history room at Bill Library has been named the Janice W. Bell
Historical Research Room in her honor and the Mayor issued a proclamation
declaring January 25, 2008 as the Janice W. Bell Local History Day. Mrs.
Bell has organized and maintained the Research Room at the library since
it first opened in 1982, collecting and organizing photos, diaries,
original family papers, old maps, land records, and genealogies pertaining
to local information. She has answered numerous inquiries from across the
country about the people, places and things in Ledyard. She recruited and
trained volunteers to work in the room helping patrons find historical
information.
Mrs. Bell has also been an active member of the Ledyard Historic District
Commission since 1973, serving as secretary for many years, and the
Ledyard Historical Society since 1973, serving as research curator since
1982. In addition she served as the first official Historian for the Town
from 1989 to 2007. She co-authored Historic Ledyard Volumes 1-5,
and was the sole author of The Bluff and The History of the
Church.
Mrs. Bell's interest in history expands beyond the library and even the
town. For the past 28 years she has been an interpreter at Mystic Seaport
Museum and is often invited to visit school classrooms in costume while
portraying historical characters from the area.
The Janice
W. Bell Historical Research Room has recently been renovated and will be
open to the public on a regular basis.
