Internet Use Policy
The Durham Public Library provides computer use
and Internet access for our patrons to enhance our collection and
to help fulfill informational and educational goals consistent with
our mission.
The Internet is a global network of multimedia
information with no central authority or governing body. Not all
information available is accurate, current or complete. Users are
encouraged to exercise critical judgment in evaluating the validity
of information.
Parents or guardians of minors using the Internet
are responsible for providing guidance to the children under their
care. The Internet may contain material that is inappropriate for
viewing by children. The library staff is not in a position to monitor
and supervise children’s use of the Internet. As with other library
materials, restriction of a child’s access to the Internet is the
responsibility or the parent or guardian. It is not possible for
the library staff to control or monitor specific information which
may be located on the Internet.
Security in an electronic environment cannot be
guaranteed, therefore all transactions, files, and communication
are vulnerable to unauthorized access and should be considered public.
Use of the Internet is a privilege and access is
voluntary. Unacceptable use, as determined by the library will result
in disciplinary action.
A person may reserve, in person or by phone, the
use of the Internet workstations for one hour at a time. Usage time
may be extended if no one else is waiting to use the workstation.
The library does not provide electronic
mail accounts to users.
Access to chat or discussion groups is not
permitted.
Copies printed from the Internet are .10 per page.
Please pay at the front desk.
All computers are turned off 15 minutes before
the library closes. All printing should be done prior to that time.
