Pat Johnson introduced herself as the new Committee chair. She will act as chair throughout the rest of the year. Lynn Fountain was introduced as the new department head for Russell. Mark spoke on the following topics:

  1. BIB.TOPIC.INDEX
  2. This would allow key word searching of everything in the MARC record. It would take about two months to index; this would not effect response time. This function would make it easier for patrons to search for an item. Instead of using many search keys they would just have to use one. Mark will look for his notes relating to this topic and get back to the members.

  3. ACQUISITIONS
  4. BISAC is now an end of the line product. At this time EDIFACT is not fully setup or ready to handle libraries.

Mark asked if File Transfer Protocol (FTP) was available through Baker and Taylor in Connecticut. LION can set this up now. This would enable LION libraries to access other member files and would free up telephones.

Enriched BISAC information is available on the LION web site. This would give the libraries the ability to set up their own accounts with the vendor and get MARC records from them. This would not work well under the current LION structure.

  5. BIBCO
  6. This is the BIB standard that has been accepted by the CLN for data provided to ReQuest. LION is not based on this "standard". BIBCO does not follow OCLC or Library of Congress Bib format manuals. LION is not sure at this time how our data will be accepted by ReQuest. It is possible we might have to revise the LION Bib Policy Manual to fall into line with BIBCO. More information is provided on the CLN web site. Implementing BIBCO would affect about 10% of the LION database or roughly 75,000 records.

  7. 856 TAG
  8. The 856 tag allows members to add URLs to the MARC record. Many times these consist of publisher or author information. PAC for windows allows Internet access to this tag if the terminal has been given Internet permission. Many LION libraries do not allow this on their PACs.

It is also possible to create a MARC record for the URL itself. This would require a change to the Bib Policy Manual since there would be no actual holdings attached to the record. The creating library would have to attach a barcode label to the record and be responsible for that record. They would have to make sure that the information in the record is correct. Keep in mind that web addresses change from time to time.

At present only 35 devices in LION are set up with this capability. Wallingford suggested that those libraries that wanted to do this should be able to. Norwich voiced concern about who would be responsible for these records. Mark stated that a minimum standard would have to be put in place for guidance. A recommendation will need to go the LION Board before this can be implemented.

  9. REMINDER NOTICES
  10. Karan reminded the members that she had sent email out a few months back informing them that she would no longer be sending out reminder messages concerning possible OCLC/Dynix record matches. If she does not hear from the library by the following month she will consider that the records do match.

  11. ISR ACCESS POINTS

There has been a problem regarding ISRs that need 1xx and 7xx tags. Due to many problems caused by members creating these tags on their own Karan had asked that they not do this. Please do not create an ISR and then MAIL her that you just did this and that it needs a 1xx or 7xx tag. She will not look at these messages. The ISRs will be reviewed the following Monday. If no match is found they would be searched again the first of the following month for up to three months. If the record is sent back to the member for upgrading, that is the time to ask her to create the missing tags.

An informal discussion regarding PCL followed. No new meeting date was set. Meeting adjourned around 11:35 am.
